THE STORY OF LUSIK

About me

Hi there! I’m Mas Banu the Indigenous owner of Lusik. I’m from Boigu Island which is the most northerly island community of Queensland and Australia. Located in the Top Western Region of Zenadth Kes (Torres Strait Islands). Boigu is about 7km from the south coast of Papua New Guinea.

I hold many beautiful memories of growing up on this geographically remote, swampy and tropical island. The sea was our front and backyard! Immersed in nature and living off the island our lifestyle included fishing from the sea, collecting shellfish from the mangroves and harvesting from our traditional gardens that were abundant with vegetables, coconuts, bananas and sea almonds to name a few. Freshwater was scarce, but we knew how to live sustainably.

Today I live in the city and will always remain connected to my island home. As an Indigenous business owner I decided to produce two delicious, organic, tropical products to reflect my dreamy childhood , and appeared Lusik!

Lusik
Lusik means flower and is a word from my grandmother’s language of Erub (Darnley Island) Meriam Mir language group in Eastern Zenadth Kes.  I like to think we are much like Lusik.  We wait for the right season before it is the right time to plant a seed. We nourish it with water and sunshine eventually reaping the rewards of its bloom.

In life it's important our very own health and wellbeing is also nurtured through this similar process.
